After the tragedy in 1986, Chernobyl became a prohibited zone. Twenty years later the area is open for tourists. Pripyat was home to 50,000 people and today, almost three decades on, the city's streets lie overgrown, and schools, apartments and shops crumble under the twin onslaught of time and the elements. A stroll through Pripyat feels very much like being on the set of a Hollywood post-apocalypse movie.

Ukrainians have been decorating eggs (pysanky) for many generations. Symbolism is at the root of all pysanky and a simple design can be full of symbolic meaning. Certain designs and symbols are reserved for different rituals such as healing, fertility, successful harvests. The name “pysanka” derives from the Ukrainian verb “pysaty,” meaning “to write.” (“Pysanka” is the singular form; “pysanky” is plural.) | ||
